I have an Intel Core 2 Duo, imac 6,1. I bought it used with Snow leopard already installed. I partitioned the disk and attempted to load Tiger 10.4.6 install dvd, but as soon as I put in the disk I get this message : "Mac OS 10.4 can not be installed on this machine". This black faced disc did not come with my computer. Could the disk be a problem ?

Yes, it is. Aside from its original disks, the only Tiger installer that will work is the Mac OS X 10.4 Server Universal Binary.

If the iMac came from the factory with Snow Leopard, you won't be able to install an older operating system (Tiger). You may need to purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard.

The 6,1 identifies it as an iMac which originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.4.7, and it was purchased used. If a retail Mac OS X 10.4 package isn't listed as being Mac OS X Server on the outside, it isn't one and won't run on an Intel Mac. Apple never released the client Intel version of 10.4 on a retail DVD because all Macs that would have been compatible with it shipped with it.

The 6.1 model of iMac, which is from late 2006 to 2007, predates Snow Leopard by a couple of years. The 6.1 iMac came with Mac OS X 10.4.7. As Niel said, only the original 10.4 disks or the Server version will work. A retail version of Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6 would work, though.

That is half the answer I was looking for. I have the wrong disc. So If I can find the server disc 10.4.7 that should work ? Is the same true for 10.5 , and will it support Mac Classic ? That is the whole purpose of the project to restore 'Classic' on a pertition.
You cannot run Classic applications on any Intel-based Mac, regardless of the version of Mac OS X its running. Depending on the application, you could perhaps get it working with Sheepshaver, but since you need a PowerPC-based Mac to get the ROM file, it would probably be most practical to just get and use a PPC Mac to begin with.

Doing so won't allow you to run any software that you couldn't from the internal drive.
