Is there a way to get my FCPX audio to Logic Pro?

There was the automatic duck option but that no longer works with FCPX 10.03

Is there a way yet for me to get my audio to Logic Pro for mixing?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Sorry Hashim, I should have been more clear.

In order to do an audio mix I obviously have to have a way to export the audio as seperate files in such a way that they are layered and timed as per the cut. Exporting my project as one sing audio file is clearly not going to be a good first step to mixing thre audio.

Traditionally OMF export has filled the role. FCPX has no OMF capabilities so Automatic Duck Pro Export filled this need but no longer works in 10.03 - so I am trying to find out how to get my layered and positioned audio into Logic Pro for mixing in the absence of OMF and Automatic duck.

What tools have Apple provided so my Pro Video Editing tool can work with my Pro Audio editing tool?

Right, OK.

This is my last barrier to really being able to use FCPX for my work.

I am very surprised by the lack of internet discussion over the fact that the Automatic Duck solution - the one Apple officially pointed folks to at the time of the FCPX release - has been broken in FCPX 10.03 and no replacement for the lack of OMF has been offered.

The answer - for anyone else looking for it is "No, you can not send your audio from FCPX (Apple's pro video app) to Logic Pro (Apple's Pro Audio App) to be mixed".

I imagine you could purchase the FCPX -> FCP7 app and then output and OMF from FCP7 but...that's a pretty cluncky solution which costs $50 and assumes you have FCP7.

I'm shooting a lot of concert footage and audio is super important. The workflow from Garage Band to Logic is seamless, one would hope this same type of integration would work with FCPX.

"Send Audio Timeline(s) to Logic" or "Garage Band" - I'll take either right now.

I want to add some finishing touches to the audio mix and it's already synched up with the master video timeline nicely, just dont' want to have to export roles > import into DAW > export new mixdown > important backinto FCPX

Also, the audio tools in FCPX, I just had a case where I tried some of the Logic Filters in the Audio Effects, added some compression and bass boost, and for some reason that audio track is corrupt now, there is a twang in one of the performances lead guitar, I removed all the filters but the weird audio still persists. So I would of been quite happy to use some of Logic's useful effects and mastering stuff inside FCPX, but this seems to be a bug at the moment.

When you export audio as seperate files via role assignment in FCPX, the tracks export as stems, meaning that they are all equal length, from the start of the FCPX project to the end of the project (regardless of their length in the timeline). This makes it a cinch to line them up in Logic. The thing you need to do in your logic project first though is to set the project sync settings to the same settings you are using in your final cut project, I just tested this and thought it didn't work until I noticed that the Logic project sync settings were at 25 FPS, rather than the 24 fps of my project in FCPX. The first thing I did was to right click on the tracks in Logic arrnge window and choose lock current smpte position. I applied reverbs, edit's, and automation, noise reduction etc. When I finished my edit's mix and sweetening I selected the regions in the bin window of Logic, and chose "save regions as", chose broadcast wave file as the output format and exported. In FCPX I imported my resultant files, muted the current audio on the timeline (V on the keyboard) and dragged my newly mixed files into the timeline. Boom. Perfect.

Thanks for the tips. mostly we will record the live event in Garage Band , or Logic but I'm still learning it to be honest, and bring in some Zoom material - so we create our audio mix independent of any camera. best practices right, but if I was like a super good audio engineer I would mix it down, bring it into FC and be all set and don't look back, but what I'm doing now, is doing a best guess of a "decent" mix and getting the audio into FCX ASAP so I can get editing video - as I go along I start to hear things in some of the sets, and then it's time to tweak again. so then I need to try your workflow, I can warm up to roles as stems, I guess it's the round trip, outta Logic, I need to do some learning,

In Logic when I get my final tweaks, do I Master and bounce or your method of exporting wave outta the bin? there's also Export Final Cut XML which creates aif files for each channel but FCX not letting me import the resulting xml, so I'm confused how that xml file is used, but I imported both aif files ok.So far my tests to the ear, they sound about the same in Final Cut monitoring out to some studio speakers, will say that the master mix / bounce, gives that extra little something.

, would love some tighter integration between the two, less importing/exporting, I do see the Logic filters in FCP but had a weird thing happen to the master track the other day, so far it has not repeated,, but I know there's not a perfect NLE and DAW solution right now so I'm not complaining what Apple has going here, actually loving it and intrigued about what may be coming down the pipe

Roles are very powerful and smart. I just exported my project to Logic pro. In FCP X, select menu: modify/edit roles... select a category like dialog and in the right window, click the "+" and make some sub roles. I made one for each person in the film. You can create subs for other categories: under music, I aded thre roles named for the three music cues.

Then in the time line, turn on "view roles" in the popup where you adjust timeline sizes. Open the info (window cmd-4), and you can assign roles in the info panel of the clip. I selected all the dialog clips for the narator and assigned them to my subrole for him - all clips assigned at once - very easy.

Then after this tidying up, open menu: share/export media, select export audio roles as separte files, you can ad your new custom roles (at the bottom) and delete the default roles (there is a minus in the right column) then export the set of stems.

In logic, make the project 48k, set sync to match your timecode to the proper frame rate, import your stems, drag them all to the begining and let Logic make a new track for each - YEAH Baby... now you have everything in sync, and all the tracks you like.

There is no automation info transfered yet, but it works nicely.

As a bonus, open the timeline index in FCPx and all your subroles now have switches to turn them on or off, or highlight them. Click on one to see evey clip in your project with that role light up. Smart stuff.

Hopefuly, Logic will be able to open FCP X XML files soon. That would be SO nice.
