Only my MBP Drops L2TP VPN Connection after 60 Seconds

My Old G4 Laptop and my Dual G5 Tower both connect to my office via L2TP VPN without an issue. with the exact same settings exported over to my mac book pro, the connection drops after exactly 60 seconds. I've tried both wireless and wired connections, and in either case, the VPN drops after 60 seconds of connect time.

I had a similar problem with my MBP, only with my standard airport extreme. Older Macs and even Win machines have no trouble. The MBP dropped wifi connection repeatedly, constantly, insanely often.

It replicated in the Apple Store at the genius bar, thank heavens. We decided the migration of old content to new MBP might have brought over a problem incompatible with MBP, so... I reinstalled OS using the install disc that shipped with the MBP.

It seems to have sort of taken care of the problem. However, I still lose connection when the darned thing sleeps. Arg. But at least I can work uninterrupted by drops now.

Hope this helps.

Same thing here. The VPN (IPSec) connexion to my OS X Server (10.4.5) drops after 1 minute with no reason. It works well with a 17" PowerBook (10.4.5).
Here what I have in my Server log :

I also have this problem attempting to connect to an XServe VPN over PPTP. During the 60 seconds, the connection appears to work fine, up until the point it shuts down. This server worked fine with my Powerbook G4. Connection log:

I checked with my VPN administrator. He upgraded the XServe to Mac OS 10.4.5, and we tried again, with the same results. He sent me the server log to post:

I have been having the same problem and decided to call AppleCare. They told me that this is a know problem (Intel only) and will be fixed in the near future. In the mean time disabling ACSP (Apple Client Server Protocol) on the server will allow the connection to complete. The command to do this on the server is:

sudo serveradmin settings vpn:Servers:com.apple.ppp.l2tp:PPP:ACSPEnabled=0

My testing has only found one side effect and that is that you will have to fully qualify all machine names instead of just using the hostname. During the negotiation of the L2TP connection the server will pass the dns settings and the domain name, but with ACSP disabled the domain name does not get passed to the client. This is so far the only side effect I have found with about 2 hours of testing and it will effect both Intel and PowerPC systems. It is however a minor inconvenience that will go away when this is fixed.

I wanted to also mention that I have only tried this with L2TP but the same setting also exists for PPTP and it may fix the problem for those of you experiencing this with PPTP connections. The server command for PPTP is:

sudo serveradmin settings vpn:Servers:com.apple.ppp.pptp:PPP:ACSPEnabled=0

I have not tested this as I do not use PPTP on my server but in theory it should have the same effect as it does for L2TP.
