Stolen ipad

I lost or had my Ipad stolen on a Delta flight. I contacted delta, but they were unable to or would not help. Since it's now over a week they said they no longer have it (if they did).

I've done the remote lock, sent messages etc...

My problem is that it was in Airplane mode, so it was cut off from internet access. If someone hooks it up to itunes w/o internet access will they be able to wipe it clean and steal it out right? I show the serial number is still registered to me with apple, but I can not find a way to make it that if that serial number goes online to notify me.

My real fear is Delta has sold it to one of those unclaimed baggage companies and it's now out there in the world. I dont want to remote wipe it for fear that it will be forever lost that way.

Not really unless found by the police or Delta, then it proves your ownership. Did you report the loss to the police and your insurance company? Did you file with Delta?

You said you lost the device. You didn't say you lost your baggage and Delta couldn't find it. Delta only sells unclaimed baggage. If you filed a claim with Delta and they find the bag, then they notify you. But a single iDevice isn't baggage. If it was stolen or you forgot it, then it's likely in someone else's hands, not Delta's.

If you failed to file a claim with Delta then they have no responsibility to you. I would count the item gone, so go buy a new one.

But what about the serial number? That shows it is registered to me, is there anything that can be done with it?

Delta and all the other airlines sell of baggage and lost items daily to a company in alabama that then sells it off in it's store. This is well known and documented. I severely doubt delta destroys an item which would bring them in $$$$$$.

Well if I have to get specific. I left it in the seat back pocket on my flight. I notified delta and filed the claim with they through there website as directed. There is no way to contact them otherwisem on the 6th day at 9pm at night I was asked for the information on the iPad and I gave it to them. I have not heard anything back since then, until this morning when I was notified that anything left in delta's possession after 7 days is no longer in their possession. It has not been online since before my flight. And all messages sent to it have not come through to the device. This is why I think it is sitting in a warehouse of the airlines.

But to answer your statement I have alerted anyone who would listen to me, but it all comes down to one company who doesnt listen. This could have been resolved shortly after my flight, but now we are two weeks out.

If they do a full reset then everything is wiped and whatever that person has on their iTunes will be installed. All your stuff would be removed completely. It would be as though they purchased it brand new.

Unless they were willing to try each and every number combination for the four digit passcode your data would not be compromised. There are 10,000 different combinations, so it isn't likely they would do that unless they were professional identity thieves. In any event if you had any credit card numbers, SSN, checking or savings account numbers, etc. I would think seriously of being overly cautious and changing what you can as well as alerting the appropriate parties of the loss. It's a royal PITA, but better safe than sorry.
