Compilation Albums - multiple album art entries to scroll through

Hello,

I have a compilation album on my iPhone that I want to show up as one album entry when browsing music with the scrolling album art view (turning the phone horizontally). Instead, it has a separate entry for each song, thus having 15 songs with the same album art to scroll through.

I never had this problem in the past and I don't know when it started to occur since I haven't had any compilation albums on my iPhone in months. Anyway, the artist tag fields each have the different artists' names. The album fields all contain the same album name. Every song has the "Part of a compilation" option toggled on. I've tried typing in one uniform album artist for every song. No matter what I do when I browse music with the album art view I get multiple entries for each song.

Like I mentioned, I did not have this problem months ago. I'm thinking this was back before iOS 5 was released. I have followed the exact same steps as before. My sister has an iPhone 4S and my mother has a iPod 4G and they have the same exact problem (the iPhone also has iOS 5). I've tried browsing for a solution, but am unable to find anybody else with the same problem.

If this is a known problem or if you have the same problem please let me know!

Confirm in iTunes that the Album Artist field is either blank, or says Various Artists. You could also select all the tracks, Get Info, uncheck the Compilation box, close the Get Info window, then do it again to check Compilation agaion. Quit and re-,loaunch iTunes.

Confirm on your iPhone that you are browsing in the Albums section, not the Artists one.

Thanks for the response! When I did fill out the album artist field that is actually what I had typed in, "Various Artists". Either way, I've tried everything you listed and it's still a no-go.

I do not want to believe that iOS 5 screwed this up, but I don't understand what I could possibly do differently. I have not changed the tags of this album since I last had it on my phone. I also have a few other compilations that used to work fine and also now do not show properly.

Again, I am only concerned with the scrolling album art view here. The frustrating part is that I haven't found anybody else with this same problem post iOS 5 release.

I guess I should've checked under the actual Albums sorting list earlier. Each song is actually being indexed individually there as well. I've tried all of the diagnostic steps again and the result is always the same. Each song has its own entry and is listed with the same album name. This problem apparently is not rooted in the album art browser after all.

Bump. Does nobody else know what the problem could be? A friend of mine sent me a various artists compilation album that shows up fine on his iPod and that also gives me the problem on mine. I gave him an album that does not work for me and it works fine for him.

Someone has to have at least heard about this problem before. I find it peculiar that I cannot find anybody else with this problem yet I have it on THREE different iDevices.

Thanks for responding once again Rysz. I have tried that and it did not solve the problem. I glanced over the threads linked in the More Like This box and none are exactly the issue I have.

I really have to be missing something here. Like I mentioned earlier I used to have no problems with compilation albums showing only one cover in the album art sort view. Now 10 tracks on a compilation album, each with the same Album Artist and Album Title, will show 10 album art entries of the same cover.

Thanks for the response jmmv.

I'd rather not change the artist tag fields. I want the individual artists to still be listed, and I want the different songs from the compilation to show up under them still. Right now I'm flicking through album covers and have five entries from the same compilation album with the same cover art and album title but different artist tags. I need these to all be under one album cover! I still don't understand how I can find nobody else with this problem, anywhere.

Sorry, "Album Artist field" and not "Artist field".

I had exactly your problem with a soundtrack album: same cover, same album name but different artists. And now I have all the song in just one cover and inside each song with the good artist.

The clue is to change the files tags, puting "Various Artist" in the "Album Artist" field (NOT the "Artist" field), in your computer before to copy them to your iDevice.

Thnks again for the response.

I was thinking that you did indeed mean "Album Artist", but I wasn't sure because in my editing program there appears to be no "Album Artist" field. I was thinking that this has to exist as that is likely the name of the tag field that iTunes is using to add an Album Artist. I'll try another editor later and hopefully it will have that field. Thanks again.

THANK YOU!

I see the Album Artist tag from Windows file properties but not from within my tag editing programs. Granted, I've had these since probably 2003-2004ish, perhaps the Album Artist tag wasn't around at that time? I'm really unsure, I just know that they do not exist with any of my editors.

I highlighted all songs in the album folder, right clicked, hit properties, and set Album Artist for all songs. They now all show up under album art entry.

This problem has been killing me for months and I have a couple albums I've been missing on my iPod because of it. All is good now, thanks again!
