Does iMessage work for international use?
I'm in the United States and my friend from Canada has iMessage and we were wondering if iMessage will work internationally without any extra fee. Does anyone know?

Yep, it will work just fine. If you both are on WiFi, there will be no charges. If on 3G, small charge for the data use, but that's all.
Thank you so much. I don't have unlimited 3G use and neither does my friend. I have Verizon and I got my iPhone right after the unlimited 3G plan was terminated. Will I receive any additional charges to my regular 3G plan if I use iMessage on 3G or should I just use it on Wifi when using iMessage internationally?
iMessage uses a negligent amount of data over 3G, not enough to even worry about.
Thank you so much
You're welcome.
If anyone is still concerned over charges with iMessage (blue bubble), the most straight-forward method to resolving this is to spend the little amount for an app called WhatsApp. After you've got the latter, all your text messaging, picture messaging, media messaging, etc. are eliminated. *poof!* 🙂
Whatsapp still uses up your data allowance, just like iMessage.
.. can't get away with using data allowances. Usage is really negligible.
Before sending what you think is an iMessage, look out for the following:
1. Open Messaging or the iphone's app for SMS.
2. Start new message / new conversation.
3. In the To: key in your contact name/number.
4. If your SMS input field says "Text Message" (grayed out), then you will be sending a text message (SMS).
If the SMS input field says "iMessage", then be confident that the other person has its iMessage enabled and therefore you WILL be sending iMessage over.
5. Send message. Watch for blue bubble
Note: Both you and the other person must have iMessage enabled (Settings > Messages > iMessage = ON)
It wasn't a question; it was a statement. Yes, I know how iMessage works, but, uh, thanks.
I have iMessage. I'm going out of the county. Does "Whatsapp" help me at all?
I''ll turn "roaming" off -- so I can iMessage if I'm on WiFi, right? Same with Whatsapp, right? Where's the benefit?
I'm clearly not seeing something that must be obvious!
iMessage can only be used to send messages to other iMessage users (people with iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches and Mac computers who are registered with iMessage). Whatsapp can only be used to send messages to people with the Whatsapp app. It is, however, a cross platform app. So, it all depends on who you're trying to message. There's no reason, other than lack of space, that you can't put Whatsapp on your phone, too.
