How to extend my wireless network with Airport Utility 6

Hi all,

I have a worked wireless network at home (secured with a WEP key).

In some pieces of my house I hadn't a very stron wireless signa, so I decied to buy a Airport Extreme device (5th gen).

But I can't extend my current wireless network.

I have Airport Utility 6.

I can install normally and correctly my airport through the ethernet cable.

But afterwards, I go tho the 'edit' mode in my base station and I configured as 'extend wireles network'.

I select the right network to extend, but when I update, I receive a "device not found error".

What I'm doing wrong?

thx

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your non-AirPort router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS).

The only option would be to connect the AEBS to the Netgear by Ethernet and configure both of them for a roaming network to extend the Netgear's wireless range.

- If I connect the AEBS on my Netgear router through the ethernet. And I connect another AEBS trhough wireless I can extend my WiFi connection? or not?

Yes, that is correct. You would then configure both AirPorts for an extended network.

- If I plan to buy a new router, how can I be sure to use the Wireless Distribution System with it?

If you are talking about a second AirPort, then it already supports this feature and the link I provided will show you how to set it up.
