3Gs No Baseband after update

Hi, this is the second iphone ive had that's done this!

The first was covered by warranty but this one isnt

After looking on the internet i presume it has the newer baseband chip made by toshiba

After updating from 4.something to the latest 5.01 and going through the re-activation it shows no wifi, baseband, bluetooth etc

Why can't itunes restore my original baseband from saved/past syncs?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 5.0.1

No your not reading this correctly, neither of my phones were hacked i have no reason to do this although now ive looked about on the web i know what your refering too, both my phones were on contract which i still have, the only real time they have been plugged in to the computer was when we originally got the to activate itunes/phones which was over a year ago easily, since then all ive done is to plug in to itunes which instantly came up with the update to the newer OS 5.01

On adding this both phones lost baseband! the first one i wasn't sure what happened as it kept switching off so i took it locally to a phone shop who advised it had no baseband (at which time i had no idea what he meant) and to take it direct to Apple, who because it was still under warrenty gave me a new phone (which was fine) this one has done exactly the same thing but isnt under warranty (just) hence the original post

i presumed that upgrading to the latest software also did something to the baseband, however if it does then why does going back to the original restore not completely restore your phone back to the way it was?

Very worrying considering i have now bought a 4s outright and scared to plug it in to itunes!

Out of curiosity, do you have a reason to be concerned about baseband? There isn't really any need to be unless you get the -1 error in iTunes.

Here's a list of the iOS versions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_version_history. Notice they all change with each update. That's firmware doing its job.

You shouldn't be "afraid" to use your phone in iTunes. If/when an update comes out, if you get an error code, you can always report it here, and the forum will help you.

gdgmacguy, usually people with baseband issues are unlockers, but not always.

So what's the answer people, i cant now use this phone for anything, it's a brick! how can Apple leave things like this it doesn't make sence, surley the original software that was shipped with the phone must be available somewhere to flash the whole thing back to stock or is it itunes that will not do that?

On the hacking side note, personaly i don't understand why you would want to hack your phone just to unlock it, im on Vodafone and they will happily do it for free!

Where did you get this phone? There is no "newer" radio chip for the iPhone 3GS, and the modem baseband is the same for all, changing with the iOS version. Whatever baseband version your phone had when you obtained it, it had to change when you updated the iOS - can't go back.

Suggest the following for recovery mode:

1. Update iTunes to latest version.

2. Disable ALL security software (firewall, antivirus, etc.) running on your computer

3. Open iTunes and connect phone to a USB port on the computer, not an external or keyboard port.

4. Press both the home and on/off buttons for at least 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears, then continue pressing the home button alone until iTunes detects the phone in Recovery Mode.

5. Follow the prompts to restore.

If this doesn't work, your phone has a hardware failure or WAS hacked in some way in the past.

Both phones were new supplied with the original contract just over 1 year ago (this ones just out of warranty the other was just in)

Im only saying it's the baseband chip from what ive researched on the web and what i was told before, apparently Apple went with another supplier for some reason (toshiba) for the baseband chip?

ive done all the above again from research but itunes always gives an error and doesn't complete

The phone will switch on for say 5 mins then reboot itself constantly, when you look in settings it has no baseband, wifi or bluetooth its all just blank

I have the exact same problem.

Phone from new supplied with contract for O2.

Never jail broke.

I always update the iOS as soon as a new one comes out.

I updated from 5.0 to 5.0.1 and this is when I started to get the same problem as you. It works at first but the then suddenly turns itself off. The turning it back on I have no signal, no wifi, no bluetooth. Then eventually mine goes in to a recovery loop. I have managed several times to kick it out of the loop by letting the battery go flat, then charge and put in recovery mode and then do an iTunes restore. This doesn't last long before the same happens again though.

I was reading on the net that it's either a corrupt baseband/firmware install or that the comms board is knackered.

With the iOS 5.1 coming out I was excited to try the update to see if it could write the the new firmware correctly and sort my problem.

I updated last night from ios 5.0.1 to 5.1. The update worked but then today FAILED.

I am annoyed like you petbeemer as there seems to be no help for this problem.

If any one else has any updates or decent ideas please respond. I will try anything.
