Used PowerMac G5 advice

Hi everybody.

A friend is selling his Power Mac G5 (11.2 model) 2GHz Dual, 4GB RAM, 6600LE, Leopard.

I'd like to have some feedbacks from other "power users" before getting it for about 500$. What about speed and performances?

I'm going to use it for music production and maybe web editing too. Being 100% mobile right now, I was looking for a desktop studio option. I know that there are pretty fast Intel out there but with a limited budget it looks interesting.

Thanks in advance,

 MacBook Pro 2.4GHz (Penryn), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Bear in mind that the G5 is obsolete, like all PPC Macs. No security or system updates will ever be available, and OS 10.5 Leopard is as far as you can go.

Developers no longer update their software packages for PPC Macs.

You will forever be stuck in the pre-2006 world of computing.

IMO $500 is at least twice what it is worth.

All of which is not the same as saying that it won't do what it can well!

But you could look for a refurbished Intel iMac. Cheaper than a new one but updateable.

Synthetic benchmarks put the Dual Core 2.0 machine at around 1800 in GeekBench, while the 2.4 Penryn gets around 3200.

The PPC G5 is limited to OS X 10.5.8 and will have compatibility issues with software used in SL and Intel Macs.

Although light music production and web design are not out of the question for the G5, using it in concert with the MacBook Pro may prove to be more than a challenge.
