I run OS 10.4.11. I want to download the OS in order to gain access to newer versions of Mail, Safari, etc, but no download site will open. Am I trying to do something that won't work?

I run OS 10.4.11, PPC. I want to download and install OS 10.4.11 again in order to access a newer Mail, but no download site will open for me. What am I doing wrong? Are they not opening because they detect that I already run OS 10.4.11?

How, instead, can I download a newer copy of Apple Mail?

Thanks much!

Leopard requirements/10.5.x...

* Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor

minimum system requirements

* 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)

* DVD drive for installation

* 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

There are workarounds if the 867MHz is the only hangup...

I should have made myself clearer. When I bought the iMac it came with gray install-disks, but of course they were OS 10.4.0, and the Mail program was version 2.x (old!).

I got my newer OS 10.4.11 from Apple Software Update(s), but they didn't include newer versions of Mail.

I know that OS 10.4.11 disks have newer versions of Mail on them. I was hoping that a web download might come with a newer version of Mail.

deecy, what version is reported when you click "About Mail"?

This is mine:

What features do later versions have that you need?

Whatever version of Mail is included with the OS X 10.4.11 combo update is likely to be the last version Tiger is capable of running. I do not believe any version of Mail is available as a standalone download. Even if it were, versions later than the one included in the Combo update are not likely to work.

I have the same version as you, John.

I'll tell you all the reason I want to download another version of OS 10.4.11 - because it might contain a newer, workable version of Mail.

I set up my apple Mail by following the set-up assistant, but every time I try to do something (anything!) I get endlessly repeated requests for my password, making Mail un-useable.

Furthermore, I think I have the wrong port numbers (110 and 25) so even if I settled the password matter, I probably couldn't send or receive anyway.

I saw online that later versions of Mail offer suggestiuons for other "port numbers" in case yours do not work; 25, 465, 587. (Been there. Done that. They don't work either.)

I went to Keychain and checked passwords - all correct.

I went into system Prefs thinking I would delete the Mail pref - couldn't find it!

Am I at my wit's end and ready to blast my iMac with a shotgun and go out and buy a PC? Yes!

Thanks for any suggestions.

deecy-

A different version of Apple Mail, or even a different third-party mail program will not make anything any better.

Apple Mail asks for your password again because it cannot successfully connect to your mail Sender or Receiver -- and does not Directly tell you which.

Mail > Window > Connection Doctor ...

... will give you some additional insight into what is not working (send or receive or both)..

Your ISP should be providing help with this, but I admit they are generally not very helpful.

What is your ISP? Maybe Readers can provide additional tips for getting it working.

Thanks Tom,

What is your email domain name - just the part after the @ - in other words: xxxx@gmail.com. What is after the @ symbol?

Grant Bennet-Adler is completely correct. You won't solve this with a new computer. I have about fifteen email addresses and OS X 10.4.11 Mail works with all of them.

Apparently Mail's Setup Assistant did not configure some obscure setting, and it is not surprising that you might have to manually configure the account. If one of us recognizes the domain name we might be able to walk you through the settings, but if not you will need your email service provider to supply them to you.

It is ...@verizon.net.

I was using Entourage for 2 or 3 years, but it suddenly stopped sending. Spent a fruitless day trying to fix it, then tried calling Verizon support; no help at all.

I did manage to get my old version of Thunderbird up and running so I'm not completely at sea.

My ISP is Verizon, Grant.

(I'm beginning to think that GMail or Yahoo Mail might be the way to go!)

From http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/FiOSInternet/Email/Setup+And+Use/Questi onsOne/86782.htm

Click on Mail Preferences > Accounts, select the account and insert the following in all the relevant fields. If you can't find where to put something let me know and I will try to figure it out.

This is for FiOS and I do not know if that's what you have, but perhaps this is a start:

  • Incoming mail server (POP3): incoming.verizon.net
  • Incoming Server Port Numbers: 995
  • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): outgoing.verizon.net
  • Outgoing Server Port Numbers: 465 Why is this important?
  • Your Verizon Online user name - try it with the @verizon.net part first, if that doesn't work just use what is before it.
  • Your Verizon Online password - be absolutely sure it is correct
  • Make sure "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" is checked.

By the way if you can still edit your post, omit or obscure your email address. No need to attract spam 🙂

I read the "Why is this important" article. It was posted in 2009. They too mentioned the same port #s.

It's amazing. When I call Verizon, and wait on hold for ten minutes, the "technician" hasn't got a clue. I even asked for his supervisor. Just as vague and unhelpful. How can Verizon run a company with help like that??

Tried your suggestions on the Port #s. No luck.

I feel like a smacked *** for being so unsuccessful.

As I said, I've got Thunderbird up and running. I'm grateful for that and I'm not even going to look at its settings for fear of screwing them up.

Best,
