Q: Airport Express Extended WiFi

Before I'd purchased my Airport Express I'd get a reduced wifi signal in my bedroom, I'd get two bars on my iPhone 4S. I'd bought an Airport Express to extend my wifi range. I've set it up to join my exsisting network and extend the wifi range. I'm still only getting two bars on my iPhone 4S in the same spots before I bought it. One of the spots where I still only get two bars on wifi signal on my iPhone 4S is less that one metre away from where the Airport Express is plugged in. Is there anything I can do to resolve this?

You can't "Extend" a wireless network of a Non-Apple router wirelessly...

You can only "Join"........

That is why your signal isn't being extended......

I don't have an older version.

6.0 and 5.6 came out on the same day....

Download 5.6 which has more useable features than 6.0
You will have both on your computer but use 5.6

Hi

Ive download Version 5.6, I find it more difficult setting my Time Capsule up using Airport Utility 5.6. Alot of it is over my head lol. That was why I'd asked for help via Skype. Unfortunately that person is currently busy and doesnt have time to help me set it all up. I might just have to fone Apple lol.

Barry,

You shouldn't have to reconfigure your Time Capsule....

Just put a check mark in "Allow this network to be extended" and click Apply.

Then look at your Airport Express....

Ive setup my Time Capsule using Version 6. Can I then use Version 5.6 to put a check in "Allow this network to be extended" If so how?

Just like my diagram I showed you on the first page....

Open up 5.6 , put a checkmark in the box and then click Update.
This will restart the Time Capsule and it should be setup to allow it to be extended.

Ive just looked and there already was a check in the box. Ive now plugged in my Airport Express and connected it to my Time Capsule via ethernet cable ready to set it up, so what do I need to do now its found in Airport Utility 5.6?

Set the Express up for "Extend a Wireless network" and then click Apply....

You should then be able to remove the cable...
It is possible that the cable needs to be removed when restarting...
This 6.0 kind of messes up a few things but this should work.

Hit the "Go Back" button at the bottom...

You want to click on the "Manual" button instead of the continue button.... once you get back......

Before I setup the Airport Express, does the ethernet cable from the Airport Express need to be connected to my Time Capsule or does it need to be connected to my BT Home Hub 3?

Neither....

I think that may be the problem.
It always thinks you want to set this up using the ethernet cable.

Can you still see the Express if you disconnect the cable?

Hi

I seem to have it working now, I did disconnect the the ethernet cable and a few minutes later the Airport Express appeared in the Airport Utility. U were right that connecting an ethernet cable was causing the problems.

Ive upgraded my iChat to the beta version of Messages.

I also have Messages...

However, if you have it working, that is great....

Airport Utility 6.0 is missing a lot of things. They seemed to make it easy to do some things for beginners but then again you can't set some things up...

Airport Utility 5.6 allows other features to be setup without being hidden like 6.0 wants to do with somethings.

Try your setup out and let us know if everything is working the way you expected.

Hi

Even though Id downloaded Airport Utility 5.6, I did use Version 6 to get it all setup. There's alot of info in Version 5.6 thats abit over my head. I'd definately help via messages if I was gonna teak my setup via Version 5.6. Its a pity that I cant pm u on here to give u my Messages username. I dont wana post it on a public forum lol.
