Q: Airport Express Extended WiFi

Hi

Before I'd purchased my Airport Express I'd get a reduced wifi signal in my bedroom, I'd get two bars on my iPhone 4S. I'd bought an Airport Express to extend my wifi range. I've set it up to join my exsisting network and extend the wifi range. I'm still only getting two bars on my iPhone 4S in the same spots before I bought it. One of the spots where I still only get two bars on wifi signal on my iPhone 4S is less that one metre away from where the Airport Express is plugged in. Is there anything I can do to resolve this?

Thanks

Baz

    Try this.

    Turn Off your iPhone.

Make sure you are close to the Airport Express.

Now turn your iPhone back on...

    How are the bars now?

If still not good, how is the signal on your Airport Express?

Is it too far away from the main base station?

I don't know the distance apart or the structure of your home, so you might have to experiment....

    Main Base Station ----------------------------------------------------->Airport Express

    Main Base Station -------------------->Airport Express

Mabye move the Airport Express down the hall a little way closer to the Main Base Station...

    Hi

Ive switch me iPhone 4S off/on. When its abour 50 cm's away from the Airport Express it was full bars. If I move the iPhone 4S away from the Airport Express by another 50 cm's, it drops down to 2 bars. My Airport Express is 4.66 metre's away from my Time Capsule. The only plug that I could move the Airport exress to would be 1 metre away from the Airport Express.

    Thanks

    I'm confused...

4.66 meters is only 5 human steps if each step = about 1 meter

Main Base Station -------- 4.66 meters ---> Express

That's not very far. I don't see why you would even need to extend your signal from the base station.

I have my Express 20 meters away from my base station and get full bars on my iPad and iPod Touch.

My Main Base Station ---------- 20 meters ---> Express

Again, not sure how your house is layed out. Can you move it further away?

How many bars when you are close to the main base station?

    Hi

I was getting a drop in my iPhone 4S wifi signal 5.66 metre's away from my Time Capsule before I bought the Airport Express. That's why I got an Airport Express. The only way I could move my Airport Express further away would be by plugging it in somehwere downstairs.

    Thanks

    Hi

Can I run an ethernet cable from the Airport Express to my Playstation 3 so its connected to my network hard wired instead of wifi?

    Thanks

Can I run an ethernet cable from the Airport Express to my Playstation 3 so its connected to my network hard wired instead of wifi?

The Express is connected to the network using wireless, so the signal on your PlayStation will only be as good as the wireless connection allows.

There is no advantage in connecting the PlayStation using Ethernet unless it happens to be more convenient.

    Hi

The connection to my Playstation 3 is abit more stable if its hard wired with an ethernet cable.

Strange that it is more stable since you are losing some of the signal in the wireless to Ethernet conversion process.

But, if it works, it works.

    Hi

I'm beginning to think that my Airport Express still isn't setup correctly. I still have the same wifi black spots around the house before I setup my Airport Express. Surely that shouldn't be?

    Thanks

    Hi

This is a screen shot of my Time capsule setup. Is the Wireless Mode correct?

    Thanks

I just helped a friend set up an AExpress to extend his TC wireless using the new 6.0 Airport utility. This was the first time I had seen the new setup & we wasted a lot of time trying & failing to find the "allow this network to be extended" on the TC. However, when we setup the AExpress to "extend the wireless network", it seems to work.

Now that I have read this discussion, I am wondering if we need to go back & download the 5.6 version app or if the 6.0 version has automatically set the TC for extension. It doesn't seem logical that Apple would remove this capability to select the extension. Do you know if the setup with 6.0 does this?

Hi Barry, I'm not sure I've explained myself very well, having read some of your replies to other members.

I have a new iMac, Time capsule and airport express. My main router is a netgear. I apparently set the 3 things up by creating a new network as that is what I was told at the Apple store.

Am I right that I cannot extend my network, but only add a new one?

If so is in any way inhibiting my wi fi usage? If so can I reset it toi an extended network and if so how?

At the moment my netgear router and Time capsule are in the downstairs room - connected by an ethernet cable.

My airport express is upstairs next to me iMac and printer (non wifi) I've noticed that when I want to print something I have to change my wifi to my netgear network- not  a major issue but not smooth.

    Can you help me?

Look forward to hearing from you.

    Michael
