Can't rip purchased Franz Ferdinand CD into iTunes - DRM issue?

My son asked me to rip his recently purchased "You Could Have It So Much Better" CD into iTunes (V 6.01) to onwardly transfer it to his iPod.

The CD drive spins up, stops and starts and then ejects the disk suggesting there is a problem with the disk. I've Googled and discovered the Sony DRM issue - is it this that is causing the problem?

All other recently bought disks rip fine. I've checked back through the threads on this forum and I suspect this problem is not unique to me.

Is there a fix to this problem? And do I now have some Sony spyware lurking in my operating system?

Thanks chaps!

Weird.
I had no problems importing the latest FF album at all.
What I have had ever since iTunes 5 is the excessive wait for original CD's to load that you've mentioned but not the error messages.

When I've had problems with importing tracks in the past I've gone into preferences and disabled the 'launch iTunes when Cd is inserted option'. The disc should then just load onto your desktop. Open the disc and drag the tracks to the desktop. These tracks will be in aiff format. Eject the disc, and open iTunes. Drag the tunes to your library, select all of the tracks, control click and convert to mp3/AAC. Delete the AIFF files from your library, and trash the ones on your desktop. Create a new playlist and drag the tunes to it.

It's annoying, it's tedious, it might work though.

Hope it helps.

Very interesting. As I said, I've been told that in Europe there are CDs that have DRM affecting Macs. But if you have a friend with a computer that doesn't have a slot loading CD drive (particularly a Mac since it is more likely that there is DRM for Windows) you should give them a try.

I hold the same CD in my hands at the moment. It's not copy contolled in the European market, nor does it have anything to do with Sony/BMG. If you take a look at the underside of the disc, near the center hole, you might want to check the series number: in my case, it's WIGCD161 SP 81749. It ripped perfectly, as any conforming audio CD, on my PC with EAC. There are no extra sessions or other "voodoo" on the disc, so you may just be having a stroke of bad luck with your optical drive recognizing this particular CD.
