Feb 26, 2012 5:21 PM in response to robbo.sandyby Tesserax,By connecting this HP printer directly to your iMac by Ethernet, both the iMac and the printer need to be on the same IP subnet in order for the iMac to "find" it. The JetDirect Print Server, a networking interface device for this printer, was designed to be connected to a wired router or Ethernet switch ... not directly to a computer.
Since this printer was built in the late 90's, the installation CD does not include OS X printer drivers, but even OS X Lion has a printer driver for the HP 4000 that may work.
When adding this printer to your Mac, you would need to select the IP Printer option for the printer type from System Preferences. Since this printer is connected directly to your Mac, you will also need to use the printer's control panel to assign it a static IP address that is in the same subnet (10.0.n.n, 172.n.n.n, or 192.n.n.n) as your Mac. Better still, I would recommend that you get a wired router and connect both your Mac and the printer to it.

Feb 27, 2012 6:37 PM in response to Tesseraxby robbo.sandy,Tesserax,
I was able to obtain the IP address of my printer.
I have tried adding the printer by clicking on the "IP" icon at the top and then entering in the IP address of the printer in the "Address" line. The computer still does not seem to recognize the printer.
Any futher thoughts?
Can you help me figure out how to assign the printer a static IP address?

Feb 27, 2012 7:01 PM in response to robbo.sandyby Tesserax,The JetDirect network adapter in your HP printer requires the JetAdmin program to administer it. I believe the only version of this software runs on Windows only. I am not aware of a Mac equivalent version. You would need this software to make configuration changes to the adapter as there is no front-panel equivalent on these older printers.
The HP LaserJet Utility for Mac (that came on the original installation CD) only support AppleTalk network administration so that won't help you either.
The only option I potentially see that you have is to borrow a Windows PC to run the JetAdmin utility to configure it ... but there's no guarentee that it will work.
