Ins and Outs of Apple TV 1st Gen.

I am thinking of buying an Apple TV (160gb) that has had the hard drive wiped clean; no OS. What will it take to restore it to an usable Apple TV? Possible? What OS does it use? Thanks!

Mac Mini, Mac OS X (10.4.1)

There is no straightforward way to install the 'OS' on the AppleTV 1.

I can't see why someone would have wiped the drive clean unless it's a replacement.

They may simply have done a factory restore to shipping OS version (the restore version is stored in a separate partition to the working one) - in which case it should be functional just without any media/wifi settings etc. It may need a software update to version 3.02 - the last version of the 'OS' released (it'a a variant of OS X 10.4).
