This happens to me all the time. You should see a little red LED light in the audio input jack, take some sorta pin/paper clip or anything like that and stick it in the jack along the side where the light is. It should feel like you're pushing a button with the object. That should fix your sound, but if not restart your computer after doing this and it should be fine.

I had a similar problem with my MacBook Pro 17" (latest version). The internal speakers stopped working and disappeared from the Sound Output choices, but the headphones does work.

In another thread they recommended inserting a tooth pick into the headphone jack. I actually removed and plugged in the headphone (while listening to music) a couple of times and the speakers came back on.

I will monitor this situatioto find out what is causing the problem. I am using a new headphone with noise cancelling (battery operated), and a 27" Apple monitor with thunderbolt.
