my question: is there currently a version of internet explorer that is available for Mac OS X Lion?
I currently live in China where most corporate websites are not compatible with safari.
for me to be able to use some features of these websites (say online banking), I will need to use Microsoft's ie (unfortunately)
if you have encountered this problem before, your help is much appreciated 🙂!

No MSIE, absolutely not.
Try this: Go to your Safari preferences, and click the Advanced pane, then select "Show Develop menu in menu bar". Then, go up to the Develop menu, select "user agent" and select whatever flavor of MSIE placates the website.
Otherwise run Windows through Bootcamp, VMware or Parrallels and use IE from there.

The latest version of IE for Mac is version 5.2. Unfortunately, this is a Power PC app which cannot be run in Lion.
While I think that is absolutely fabulous advice, I would never trust my banking with the idiots that wrote that website if you can fool it by changing the user agent.
Stop doing an online banking with that bank.
If they are dumb enough to think IE is secure, they are real security retards.

The OP mentioned banking just as an example, but most corporate IT departments are run by clueless idiots. As recent history shows, you would be hard pressed to find any industry with more clueless idiots than banking.

concerning changing the develop tool settings... sounded like the most promising one but unfortunately it didn't work out.
as far as online banking in China goes, I trust the servers running the banking system are much more efficient than the poorly qualified bank tellers.
by using online banking out here, I am less exposed. trust me 😁...

If all you want to do is run IE, Virtual Box is a free
alternative to running Windows in a virtual machine,
thereby not needing to reboot to use windows.
Another option is Wine. This creates a container for
windows applications that can run natively using the
Windows API. Crossover by Codeweavers is a commercial
version of this system. They add tools to make it easier
to set things up to run.

So I can still see Windows installed on the Mac as the best way around it if it is not an option to buy a Windows Laptop for this purpose. Through Bootcamp, I would presume to be the best way. What's your thought on that?

If you search google you will find various comparisons of the alternatives, e.g.

However, Chinese websites should work with Chrome or Firefox, which have similar compatibilities. Otherwise, installing Boot Camp or purchasing a Mac between 1997 and 2002 may help.
