The fierce rivalry between Microsoft and Apple has made it difficult to continue having Internet Explorer on a Macintosh after 2002. However, Chinese websites should work with Chrome or Firefox, which have similar compatibilities. Otherwise, installing Boot Camp or purchasing a Mac between 1997 and 2002 may help.

If that were true for banking I don't think you would have postings like this one.

I am also having this same problem. the online system for real estate agents in Dallas is IE only. Well, that would be incorrect some items can be viewed in other systems. but one specific portion is only viewable in IE. LAME. people need to get it together and diversify their websites hahaha!!!!

Hmm, if you are on lion it is going to be easier to get a virtual windows going on your system. Don't think for a minute it is just a China issue. I JUST upgraded to lion, but on Leopard I was able to run a version of IE - because I had only two options for accessing my ATT business voicemail - IE or Firefox. Currently, I am not able to run EITHER on Lion. About ready to go back to Snow Leopard and simplify my life. I'm having all sorts of issues with Lion that are supposed to be fixed my adjusting prefences that are not holding. It's been a **** of a week let me tell you.

IE will work on any version of OS X except 10.7 (you will need to install Rosetta on 10.6—I really don't know why 10.7 doesn't support it anymore, it was pretty **** useful while it lasted :/)

This discussion has saved me oddles of time.

I too live in China...  and in order for me to make changes on my account on AIR CHINA, I was told that I needed internet explorer.   I tried with Safari and kept getting ... 'please see a service agent.'

Thanks for the tip.   I'm going to try the user agent on the Develop menu.

FYI:  At first I was one of the few MAC users in my company.   I had to fight with the IT dept in my company to make their web pages Safari or Firefox compatible...

Recently... the tide has turned since the new R&D dept and Design dept use Macs...   and iPhones and iPads and .....

China is a fun and upbeat place to work....

FYI  I haven't tried online banking here...   I'm still using my U.S. bank account for online stuff.

fingers crossed this works out for me

I am having the same problem but not because I live in China. I am trying to file a banking document with the US Treasury and have just received an email from Treasury saying their on-line filing system is not compatible with Safire (or with Firefox or several others). As I've only recently bought a Mac, I'm a bit stuck.... Will try the Develpp/user agent approach to see if that works.

I ACTUALLY HAVE AN AWESOME ALTERNATIVE.. i have a friend who is a microsoft head but me being a Mac  and going through an online real estate course i had to find an alternative  and i found it...    www.opera.com  is an operating system that you can actually select a setting where it MASKS the browser and makes the website think that it is an internet explorer browser   .......   here is how to use it    when you are in a site that needs it, or on any site in general.  right click on the page    go down to edit site preferences   under that go to Network   on the bottom of that it should have a selection called browser identification   and then you can select that page to identify as internet explorer, or mask as internet explorer. and there you go.    it is just like having internet explorer on your mac without having to deal with the crappy internet explorer browser    opera also has a browser for PC

You can do this in Safari as well Chance. As I wrote above:

Try this: Go to your Safari preferences, and click the Advanced pane, then select "Show Develop menu in menu bar". Then, go up to the Develop menu, select "user agent" and select whatever flavor of MSIE placates the website.

it is just like having internet explorer on your mac

No, it's not.  People have been doing what you suggest for a very long time, with various browsers, but it is no help when the site you are trying to access uses ActiveX, a windows-only technology commonly used, for example, by Chinese banks for online banking.  For such purposes only the real Internet Explorer will work.

There are other browsers and other ways of 'spoofing' the user agent. Best to find one for your specific needs and stick w/it
