Why do I have to connect manually to my wireless network after sleep mode on my mac?

I have been having problems just lately that when I wake up my mac it will not find the wireless connection automatically. I have to do this manually by selecting the correct network from the list of the many it sees. I have set it up in preferences to be the network to connect to but it just will not connect itself.
