iMessage "delivered" yet not arrived

I am losing the plot with iMessage now and have it disabled at present.

I have had a few people now send me messages which show as "delivered" and blue on their iphone but I NEVER receive them. This came to a head this weekend whilst in Wales when 13 iMessages in a row did this from my girlfriend (who thought I was ignoring her).

Not only did I not receieve 13 from her but also looking back through conversation history have identified a further 3 which I have sent to her (they show as blue and read "delivered" - she never received them.

Anyone else having the issue? I have only noticed because people have specifically asked me why I haven't replied to those ones and then shown me screenshots of their message trail.

At present this feature is absolutely useless as I have no way of knowing if I am missing messages or if the person at the other end recieves mine. What a poorly tested piece of software to be able to actually just lose messages in the ether.

I have previously had frustration with it, waiting for the imessage to fail to say to "send as a text" but actually saying it is sent and never arriving is just appalling.

Yes, I've been having this problem recently. Messages I've sent to other iPhone 4s have not been received and messages people have sent me never arrive. All show as delivered. Only a few messages get lost - the vast majority come through fine. This unreliability is really frustrating.

Do you have multiple devices (e.g. Another iPhone or iPad)? I do, and think this may have something to do with it but the missing messages aren't there either. I had an earlier problem where outgoing messages from me had a "caller id" of my email address rather than phone number, so responses would go I any device which was logged in to iMessage. If my phone had no signal, my iPad would get the message and show as delivered but my phone would never receive it. And the message would never revert back to being sent as an SMS so if I was roaming without data, I'd not receive the message. Changing the caller I'd to my phone number in iMessage settings solved this particular problem (though if I remember rightly, I had to disable then re-enable iMessage to register the phone number properly).

I'm running iOS 5.1.1 by the way.
