People who need to SCAN & PRINT without a compatible driver from their manufacturer can use Apple's very basic "PRINT & SCAN" utility in System Preferences:

  1. Click the Apple menu (User uploaded file ), and then click System Preferences .
  2. Click Print & Scan (User uploaded file ).
  3. Click Scan , and then click Open Scanner .
  4. Click Show Details . The details of the scan display, including options to modify scan settings such as output type.Figure 2: Example of the Show Details scanning screenUser uploaded file
  5. Change any settings as necessary, and then click Scan .

Hope this helps 🙂

Often after an update of the OS you have to reinstall the scanner driver or the printer-scanner driver. The scanner driver will appear in the SystemPreferences/Users&groups/LoginItems window after the install. After the install you should restart the mac. Drivers for your printer here:

Thanks for the advice, RM. I'm having the same problem with my device. Unfortunately this solution doesn't work. When I "open scanner" in the basic Print and Scan menu, all I get is a blank grey screen. Before the update to v.2.3 of the Samsung printer driver I would use this option to scan all the time.

Installing an older version of the printer driver also doesn't work, for some reason.

Hi Lex, thank you for the tip - I'm completely new in this arena.

Regarding your questions

* I'm using a Mac Mini

* Running OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)

* Samsung SCX 4300 is connected via USB

It all worked fine until the latest (automatic) upgrade from OS X - both printing and scanning.

Since the last update the SCX only prints. If you select the scanner (via Preview or System Preferences), you only see an empty screen instead of a preview. You can press the preview button, but nothing happens. The scan button is grey, cannot be used.

I already tried the update of the printer driver, via the link you provided earlier in the thread. But this doesn't change anything I can see.

In the Snow Leopard Era (long ago!) I had similar problems. At that time the solution was to clean the harddisk from old stuff (with CleanMyMac). So I also tried this, with no result.

Thanks in advance for your help (or anybody else reading this)!

I've got a Samsung SCX-4500 which had been going fine until I downloaded the latest driver update from samsung (2.3) when it came up during a Software Update. After I had done that my scanner no longer worked. So I used time machine to get the old drivers back thanks to reading the post below:

Same Problem here (after installing 10.7.3 and samsung printer software 2.3 via system update). I restored "Samsung Scanner.app" in /Library/Image Capture/Devices from a time machine backup i run before doing the updates (if you tried scanning you can´t replace the app because it´s in use. Then do a restart before restoring). Now my scx-4500 scans again. Let´s wait for samsung printer update 2.3.1 ...

This completely fixed my problem and the scanner is working fine again. I suspect when you upgraded your OSX your mac automatically upgraded you to the new samsung 2.3 printer drivers which don't work.
