Q: Playing movies stored on external hard drive via Apple TV-how?

i have just purchased Apple TV. I have confured it to see my computer , can I play movies I have stored on an external hard drive? Also can I add these to my iTunes library to make them available to watch?

Apple TV (2nd generation), Mac OS X (10.6.6)
