Any experience with Illustrator CS2 and MBP?

Hi Everyone!

I read a lot about the performance of Photoshop CS2 with Rosetta, but I would like to know how the Illustrator CS2 works with the new MacBook Pro.

Thanks for your comments!

I have a Dual 2 Ghz MBP with 2GB of RAM.

Illustrator CS2 is about as fast as my 1.25 GHz PB was. Maybe a little faster after you start it for the first time.

I am having some file saving issues. No error message. It just acts as though it is saving the file and then I find out it wasn't. It may be just a file specifc problem.

I am wondering if someone can advise me on the MBP vs. the PowerBook. I am a graphic designer who primarily uses Illustrator, Photoshop and Quark XPress. I am looking to purchase a laptop and would prefer to go with the MBP but have some concerns with running graphics programs as I have heard and read that they run slowly.

I hear that CS3 is coming out later this year that will solve the Adobe "slow" issue, but have not heard anything about how Quark currently runs or when they will come out with an update.

Any opinions?

I am running a MBP 2.0 with 2gb of memory. Adobe CS2 Photoshop and Illustrator take some time to load up but once loaded they seem to run at the same speed as my old PB. Nothing noticeably slow.

The biggest thing I have noticed is that even when I just have them open in the background, no document open, that they put about 5% strain on the CPU. Not a big deal unless you are on battery power then this is going to effect your batter life.

As for upgrades, at this point Adobe is saying they will not have a universal binary till cs3, so yes you will have to pay to upgrade. The worse news is that as of last week, abode is now saying it maybe the 2nd quarter 2007 before they release CS3. OUCH! I really hope this changes as I hate to think I will have to wait a year to have an adobe products that really take advantage of this machine.

The programs work decently fast. However, I have 1 gb of RAM and when I use Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign all at once (plus iTunes, iChat, Mail, and Safari). Things start crashing. Maybe more RAM would make my hyper-multitasking more successful. When I close a few things down, things are generally fine.

PS - Version Que does NOT work AT ALL on Intel. I checked on Adobe's website and it's simply not an option to use it. (Like it really worked anyway 😉

I work in prepress at a commercial printer. I have been testing out my MBP 1.8GHz with all CS1 and CS2 apps as well as Quark Xpress 6.5. I also only have 1GB of ram at the moment (second 1GB will arrive today). Anyway all the apps run slower than on my G5 Dual 1.8GHz. That may be due to the slower hard drive speed and lower amount of ram. Most apps take a little longer to launch, but once up and running perform just fine. Acrobat 6 and ID CS2 take the longest to launch. I haven't had any crashes or kernal panics with any of the apps. Quark also works well. Still a bit slow, but very fuctional once up and running. Also Citrix for Mac works as does ApogeeX client 1.27. Overall I have had a better experience with this machine than DC 2.0 GHZ G5. I had kernal panics from the beginning the MBP has had no problems so far. If you need to use a MBP fro serious design or prepress upgrade as much as possible. ie 7200RPM drive and 2GB of ram.
