Q: QuickTime Player: New Screen Recording question

I found a very easy way to do this. To record the screen and internal audio with quicktime (not the mic. but only the internal audio). While recording you can still listen to the movie on headphone or speakers and make as much noise as you like without disturbing your recording.

1. Download the free version of Apowersoft mac screen recorder.

2. Install and launch the program

3. Launch quicktime and open a new screen recording ( archive - new screenrecording )

4. Open the dropdown menu on the right and a new option has appeared. Besides internal mic. you can now choose "Apowersoft_Audio device"

Press record and you are ready to go. Important is to first launch Apowersoft and after that open quicktime. If Apowesoft is not opened first it wont work. I suppose the same trick would work with other programs that record internal audio but i only tried it with this one.

Best solution with Quicktime only : In Quicktime choose File->New Screen Recording. Then from the tiny drop down on the right of the dialog select "Built-in Input: Line In".  Then send the sound from the headphone jack to the line in jack using a mini plug to mini plug cable (cheap).  Start the recording and follow the instructions.  Easy. 

If you select "Built-in Microphone: Internal Microphone" without the cable, the sound will not be as clear and you will pick up sounds in the room.  But it works.

What if my mac doesn't have two different input/output ports that are shaped like that?

Is there any cable that could plug into the headphone output then plug into a USB port as an input to get around this issue?

But also am i correct in thinking that the headphone output is analog and usb input is digital? so would i need some kind of converter?

You may not have noticed, but you have posted in a VERY old thread, in particular replied to a post from Nov 2012.

If you really have an issue, you would be best served by crafting your own New Question. Since your  post deals with hardware issues rather than QT software, you might consider posting in the appropriate forum for your Mac and merely state that QT screen recording is why you are asking.

If you are wanting to screen capture a video , including the internal audio generated by the computer (eg the audio on the video you are playing), there is a solution ...

It seems that Apple makes this hard because of piracy concerns, but many of us need to do screen capture with audio for legitimate reasons.

I learned this clever workaround from ethan.brown.7927408 on instructables com:

Plug an auxiliary cable (male at both ends) into the headphone jack and the other end into the mic jack.

Thanks so much, mns579, for your simple steps when I really wanted some good audio (my daughter has been on a lot of news and radio broadcasts lately, so wanted some good recordings to make sure we had it forever!)

I have read through all these posts, and the comments are valid, but the easiest solution is to buy a third party screen capture software if you really need to record audio from a screen recording. I use Screenflow. https://www.telestream.net/screenflow/

You can get a trial version for free that is the same thing but displays a watermark. However, be honest and support the company, pay the $99, and solve your problem. Much easier and more practical.
