I just downloaded the trial version of Sorenson Squeeze and am trying to compare the results of mpeg2's. The problem is in the settings in Squeeze, its asking me for a data rate for the encode. I have never encoded via data rate and am wondering how it compares to bit rate. I am trying to encode at a bit rate of 5.5. So what would the data rate equivelant of that be? Is there a formula or something?
DON'T FORGET TO MARK YOUR QUESTION ANSWERED OR HELPFUL.,

good question. I looked bit rate and data rate up, and in my dictionary it says that they're the same (please don't have me go into semantics here, of course there is a slight difference). So I guess when you're saying you want to use a bit rate of 5.5, that means 5.5Mbit/s?

I looked at it again and think I figured it out. The data rate they were asking for was in kbps and the bit rate which I'm used to using is in mbps. So the question I guess I now have is if I'm wanting to encode at 5.5 mbps then what is it in kbps? I'm guessing its a slide of the decimal point but I have to do some reading.
I just found a Bitrate Calculator, and they're using kbit, too. Saying that 7Mbps, for example, is quite simply 7000kbps. So I guess you'll just have to type in 5500kbps and off you pop.
