Q: Migrate expired mobileme email address to icloud alias

Hi,

I had a Mobileme family pack and at one point i was using a second email address.

Later I swapped it to use an address for someone else.

Now I would like to use that old address as an icloud alias but don't know how.

Any ideas?

You can't do this: you will have to create a new alias. Or you could probably use the old address to set up a new iCloud account and enter it as a second account in System Preferences>Mail, Contacts & Calendars.

    Thanks for your reply.

I have also had a chat with apple support and discovered the same thing. If you had a family pack on mobileme and had used sub account @me email addresses and then reassigned them they are in effect held forever out of use too everyone for use with mail. They can however be used as an apple ID. Though I can't work out how despite the instructions below.

Q: I would like to reactivate a mobileme sub account that was not in use when I changed the main account to iCloud?

A: You can re-activate this account, ******@me.com, by signing into iCloud preferences with the username and password to this account. When you turn on mail for that account it will require that you create a new @me email address because this one is inactive and was not active when you set it up with iCloud.

Q: Does this mean i can never recover it?

A: You can use the email as an Apple Id you just have to use an new @me email address for mail.

That is a bit confusing, not to mention illogical. What it apparently boils down to is that you can use the expired address as a login, but you can't use it as an email address -  which isn't what I understood their documentation to imply. It's pretty pointless - who cares what the login is anyway? What matters is the email address.

    Looking at it, they say:

    Inactive or expired MobileMe accounts
Inactive and expired MobileMe accounts do not need to move to iCloud. Simply use your inactive or expired account to sign up for an iCloud account and follow the onscreen instructions. See this article for more information.

This doesn't actually state that you can use the accounts as an email address - or that you can't. Why not give it a try and see what happens?
