Disconnect all peripherals and see if the condition improves.
Reapply the 10.5.8 Combo Update. Not through Software update, but download the .dmg.
You don'tlist any specifics.
Any PCI cards?
What graphics card?
Use an ADC monitor?

Feb 28, 2012 2:01 PM in response to Steve Taitby Texas Mac Man,Are you saying you have installed the 10.5.8 update but now it won't sleep?

Instead of using Software Update to install on-line, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update off-line.
I use this freeware utility, Caffine, when I need to keep my Mac from going to sleep. Download at http://lightheadsw.com/caffeine/

Feb 28, 2012 2:38 PM in response to japamacby Steve Tait,Hiya japamac,
The reason I didn't list any specs on this topic is because I haven't added any new software or hardware to my mac, the mac operated perfectly well before the update, i.e. the sleep function.
I have previously done an update to 10.5.8 on my mac but after the sleep issue I did a complete re-install of 10.5 just so that I could get the sleep function back.
Going back to your question as to the specs, hope the information below is what you want:
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 9600
Not really sure what you mean by ADC Monitor, but I have an HP2310ti Monitor connected to the mac.
With regard to PCI cards, I have installed a USB2.0 five terminal card, 1 is internal which has a Bluetooth usb connected, and the four external ones have my printers connected to them.
I previously tried disconnecting all the peripherals etc but it made no difference, so was just wondering if there was something wrong with the update.
Cheers, Steve

Feb 28, 2012 2:42 PM in response to Texas Mac Manby Steve Tait,Hiya Tom,
I have previously done the update to 10.5.8 and that was when I discovered the sleep issue, so I did a complete re-install of 10.5, and have not had any problems with the sleep function with the present configuration.
So I was just wondering if there was some sort or bug within the 10.5.8 update.
I would do the update again but I do want to have the sleep function as I am sometimes away from my mac for periods of time.
Cheers, Steve

Feb 28, 2012 7:38 PM in response to Steve Taitby japamac,Stuff happens with updates. Usually, issues are due to some hardware not being compatible anymore.
Check the settings discussed in the articles that I linked. Settings sometimes change to default in a major update.
If there were a bug it would have been known years ago.
The USB PCI card is most suspect.
The Bluetooth is also.
Remove the card and see what happens.
Remove just the Bluetooth and see what happens.
