Q: Computer died??

My computer won't turn on.  Screen is black, light on bottom right side comes on and stays on.  Is htere any way to hopefully turn it on at least once so I can get a CD out of the drive and maybe save files to a flash drive?  The iMac is old, probably about 5-6 years old.

I am also having a similar problem. Can you hear the chime when you first turn it on? If you can, then try to reset the PRAM, by holding down the Option, Command, P and R keys at the same time right after the chimes. This is how I sometimes can get mine started. I have an iMac ALS 20 inch 2.0GHz. It helps if you put this type of information in your posts.

    Good Luck

My computer is (I believe) a iMac 5,1; Intel Core 2 Duo; 2 Ghz.

There is no chime.  I tried the suggestion of holding down the keys at startup, but no luck.  I can hear it making some noises like starting up.  Light on right side just stays on and screen remains black.  Any other helps.  I don't want to take the back off if I don't have to.

    Hi,

I got a new iMac 21.5" i5 and mine would not start up.  As it was under warranty I took it to local apple store.  They said the graphics card was not communicating, so replaced the card, no computer still did not work, so they replaced the main board.  It was up working.  When I went to go in and collect it, and the hard drive failed, so that too needed replacing.  After a few days seem to be working fine, then turned machine off and guess what would not boot up, but this time I had the chime, but a constant circle under the apple going round and round.  Called apple, we could not unmount or erase the hard drive, so they advised me to take machine back for replacement.  Done that last Tuesday and all seems to be working fine.

If resetting the PRAM didn't help, try here...

Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck

Your best bet might be to take it to an Apple store / reseller, Klaus 1 thought that you had an iMac g5 (PPC 2005) like I did, that why he mentioned tajking off the back which is easy for that model but not for yours.

Thanks for the help.  None of it is working.  It won't start up and I have  astuck CD in the drive.  No chime, just the constant white light on the right bottom of the front (not the screen) part, the case part.
