How do I stop sending iMessages to someone who no longer has an iPhone?

My friend and I both had iPhones, but she recently upgraded. Now when I text her, I have to turn iMessage off or the message would go to her old phone and not her new one. I want to be able to iMessage everyone else without having to switch it on and off. What can I do to change this?
