Is it possible to automate the conversion of AVI files to MP4?
I'm running Lion and I would like my Macbook Pro to automatically convert my downloaded movies to MP4 and add them to iTunes...
Automator might do the trick right?

Probably. Depends on the convertor.
There is a command line version of Handbrake that combined with Automator should be able to do this. However, having not done so myself I can't give you instructions on how to set things up. A Google search should generate results.
Pay $10 for iVi pro. You won't regret it for a moment.
