I have to press hard to get my Magic Mouse to click.

It is possible portions of the gap between the top part and the bottom part of the mouse are clogged. This is the gap (mostly toward the front half of the mouse) that closes down when you "click" the mouse. Look at from the side and click and you will see. You said you have been using the MM for a year so this is possible.

What I suggest is using small postit notes (I've done this) to stick the sticky edge into the gap to try to work out any gunk that may be clogged in there. You might be surprised on what comes out. 😉

If you don't have any small postits the next best thing would be the corner edge of a piece of paper.

I guess all mice need cleaning every once in a while, even magic mice when they loose some of their "magic".😀

I took a business card and ran it around the top end of my rechargeable Magic Mouse, and the click tension improved immediately. No junk or critters came out but it fixed the issue.

I owe you a beverage of your choice. My magic mouse has been poorly responding to clicks for the better part of the past 6 months. I just tried your advice on sliding a post-it through the edges. I really went to work on it (i.e., scraped the insides vigorously and blew into the edges repeatedly). Tons of tiny dust bunnies came flying out.

This really worked, this morning my mouse suddenly stopped clicking normally and I had to use a lot of pressure to click. I did not have post it note, but tried the paper and blowing and now it is working. Thank you, thank you. Saved me in the middle of a project with a deadline looming.

Ah, the power of community! Many thanks for the tip. Yes, my magic mouse, vintage 2009, suddenly got heavy. Your post-it tip worked immediately. I found the weak-adhesive edge helpful. Gunk included insects. Are they breeding in there, or what?

Are you sure this is a Magic mouse and not a Mighty mouse? IIRC the Mighty allows you to adjust the tension from underneath.

Another thing that could have happened is that the battery door isn't fully closed. After changing batteries the door must be closed with a firm press to make it "seat" properly.
