But I do NOT want iCloud...

So I keep getting these alerts from Apple TELLING me (not asking) that I have to migrate to iCloud or my MobileMe will be turned OFF come June.

The problem I have with this is that iCloud requires Lion, I have absolutely NO DESIRE (and no justified need) to move from SL to Lion as it has and will break many of my Apps -- tried on a test Mac and have read enough of these forums to see the compatibility problems Lion has with some of my key applications and 3rd party devices.

iCloud is basically forcing me to use "cloud storage" (aka servers) to hold my data (audio, video, data, contacts, etc.). This is done by synchronizing and/or moving my local storage to server storage ... given that even high speed internet access is still considerably slower (about 1000X slower) than storing MY data on MY hard drive. It's also a redundant and time consuming (read bandwidth hog and CPU hog) "feature" that I don't want. The LAST thing I want is iCloud using a CPU core to sync files while I'm rendering a Cinema4D project and/or working with Adobe PP and/or FCP7 rendering. And to be honest, I don't wany MY data on someone else's managed server ... no thanks!

So as it stands now, my MobileMe will EOL (end of line) because I will not upgrade to Lion which has iCloud.

The question is WHY? I see NO valid reason WHY I have to lose MobileMe?

And finally, why is iCloud not available for SL? iCloud has been made available for Windows platforms, why not for SL?

Sorry, but Lion is the worst OS to come out of Apple in a long time ... it's slower, has memory management issues, and a host of other issues (especially around older MacPro 1,1).

Same here and if it wasn't bad enough that iCloud is a forced upgrade to Lion it doesn't even provide many of the services that MobileMe provides.

You do not have to use iCloud at all if you do not want to. I only use the email and find-my-iPhone feautre. I do not use it for anything else, no storage, no sync'ing, nada!

All you need do is migrate to iCloud so you keep your current @me.com address, and then you may or may not choose to use any or all of iClouds features as it suits you. No one is forcing you to do a thing - you could migrate and then completely forget all about iCloud and never use any single part of it at all.

If all you want to use is the email, then fine. It is just regular old IMAP email and will work in any client on any platform (I read my iCloud mail on a Linux box, and sometimes using Thunderbird on a Vista machine). On my OS X Lion machine, I have all of iCloud disabled and do not use any of it. I onlys sync my iPhone contacts over wifi with my laptop, and I use my Google calendars as my means of syncing my work and personal calendars with my computer and my iPhone. Nothing requires you to use iCloud for anything.

If you did want to use some features, you would require OS X Lion to do so. But you can still have an iCloud account just for mail and simply not use any of the other features.

Gramps, if you migrate your account to iCloud, you can continue to use your old .mac address just fine - set up the iCloud IMAP account in any email client you want to use. You DO NOT need to run Lion to use iCloud email, and you DO NOT need to use iCloud for anything if you do not choose to.

Even if you get Lion, just disable any or all of the iCloud features you don't want to use.

Adding insult to injury, my dotmac address was something I had to pay for and keep paying rather big bucks to maintain. And now they tell me that they will take it away if I don't upgrade to Lion and change over to iCloud. dotmac is my main address and it will cause all kinds of chaos here if I am forced to change to yahoo or whatever.

I don't know about others but I feel betrayed by Apple and left to swing in the wind. Thanks Apple! 😠

Not so!

I took the bait and navigated the path to upgrade my mobileme to iCloud. But I came to a screeching halt when they listed requirements. The requirements to switch to iCloud include the need to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion which is something I am not willing to do. With all the nasty things that are showing up when people change to Lion, I opt to stay the **** away and stick with Snow Leopard. Also, with all the horror stories about people losing their archived mail, calendar pages, etc. when changing to iCloud, again, count me out! I am an elderly guy who really doesn't need this kind of aggravation at this time in my life. Why can't I just stay with SL and keep my dotmac mail address which I paid big bucks for?

I can't get iCloud without upgrading my OS to Lion, so I have no idea what you are talking about?? Try to run the migration, you'll see. Also, I have my web site setup (using iWeb), I have my own domain name pointing to my web site ... moving to iCloud will change all this. Email address is the least of my concerns.

But no ONE here is answering the KEY question:

Why is iCloud available for Windows PC (installable product) yet for the Mac we have to upgrade our entire OS to get iCloud??

Anyone care to answer this?

No takers?? It's called Apple Forced OS Upgrade (or downgrade pending how you look at it) and most likely a hardware upgrade because I know my MacPro 1,1 will have problems with Lion.

I know what path I have to take, I will have to move my web site to GoDaddy or some other hosting service because I'm NOT going to upgrade to Lion just for iCloud support.

In a word Apple have mobile mania and iGadget fever, anyone else who has supported them for years is just SOL. Thanks Apple! May your greedy paws come back and haunt you!

Mar 1, 2012 10:32 AM in response to Rob A.

Open any browser you have. Go to www.icloud.com and sign in with your current mobileme ID and password. You will be prompted about moving this mobileme account to iCloud. When done, you will have migrated your mobileme account to iCloud - no need for Lion, no need for any software or OS update at all, no need even for a Mac computer use windows and IE if you wish.

You can now set up iCloud mail as IMAP in your mail client using the settings here - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864

You now have moved to iCloud, keep your old @me.com address (and .mac address to if you have one) all without anything whatsoever to do with OS X Lion.

Now, without Lion or an iOS 5 mobile device (iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad) you cannot use any of the additional features of iCloud even if you wanted to, but you can certainly use iCloud mail.

If you ever do upgrade to Lion, you may use the additional iCloud features, or you may go into the iCloud control panel and simply disable them. If you never update to OS X Lion, you can remain happily ignorant of all the other features of iCloud and never give them a moments thought. Just use iCloud mail either through the web page, or as with any other IMAP email service you use or have used.

You can, no matter what you think. Migrate at www.me.com/move, lie about having lion and then add the email to Mac mail (just like many others have done succesfully). You can use iC;oud mail an just about anything that exists, as other posters have pointed out to you.

These are the correct settings for Mail (set it up manually)

If you are unable to achieve this you are doing it wrong, post back and get help.

I did not respond to the iWeb issues, sorry. Regardless of whether you migrate to iCloud or not, iWeb gets shut off in June, and iCloud does not include any web site hosting services. So, anyone with a web site hosted off mobileme has to find an alternative hosting site, or loose their web site come June. Apple is getting out of the business of hosting personal web sites.

Jul 2, 2012 10:37 AM in response to Rob A.

I'm in the same position as the OP - want to stick to Snow Leopard. The whole iCloud thing for such as us has been very badly explained by apple no doubt to scare people into upgrading.

I use my mac/me.com address for all purposes and I want to be able to access it remotely.

That's all. And it seems to work with simply opening icloud.com, entering my apple login and bang! remote email.

I've yet to try it on the antediluvian microsoft system used at my office... we'll see.

Same here, I decided I do not want iCloud, because I do not want my data synced and mananged on another server period. It's not a service I want. I let mobileme expire. My password hasn't been working since, and I cannot access my Account through iTunes. I don't care about not having .mac email anymore, but I do want to have an Apple ID that works, so I can purchase things on iTunes.

I asked for help, and after giving them the personal info they asked for in order to reset the password...their reply was that they could not reset it for me, then assistant states, "I have checked with the Senior advisor and found out that this account has been associated with iCloud. Since MobileMe is already cancelled, your password can be reset by iCloud support."

This after ignoring all their daily emails to upgrade...and stating many times to the assistant above that I do NOT want iCloud.

I decided to trust some of the experts here and migrated my mail accounts to iCloud (sweating blood all through the process). It went very smoothly and I now have all my mail accounts (including the dotmac account) going through the iCloud '@me.com' account. It works very well and is actually much faster now that I am out of the mobileme environment (probably switching from POP to iMap has something to do with it as well).

If you use the instructions from:

http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudmail.html

It makes it quite easy.

And this (along with many other reasons) is why I've moved away from Apple's products and "services".

Apple's history of forcing products on end users:

1. My perfectly functional iPhone 3G stops working correctly after iOS4 update, Apple's phone support response buy a 3GS or 4, this web sites response (support/discussions) you have a choice to stop using Apple 3G device

2. My MacPro 1,1 will not work with Mountain Lion, Apple's response "stay with Snow Leopard or buy a newer MacPro" but MacPro's have NOT been updated in over 2 years and EOL'd

3. Why is my MobileMe web site expirings with iCloud and not being automatically moved over to iCloud, Apple's response is "Try these web hosting services and here is a link on how to move your existing web site from MobileMe..."

4. Why is there no "pro upgrade version" of Final Cut Pro? I've been paying $700-$1000 for FCP upgrades every new release over the past 6 years and now all I can do is buy a full version of FCPX (feature limited) for $299? Apple's response "FCP has been discontinued".

At no point does Apple provide a reason why it treats existing customers like this ... because the reason is a simple one: MONEY.

To say Apple doesn't care about customers is probably an understatement. Apple seems to think that "Buy the latest, dump whatever you have, start over every couple years" is good for ... no one except Apple's revenue. Eventually this philosophy will catch up with them (and based on frequency of these forum threads it already has) as more and more Apple consumers have to dump perfectly functional hardware, devices, services if they want to continue using anything Apple.

My advice, don't take the bait -- what Apple offers doesn't justify the high price of maintenance.
