On a 6th gen nano, how do I switch off Shuffle when playing an album?

On previous generations of the nano, whenever I selected an album, the tracks would automatically play in the correct order. On my 6th gen, however, the tracks of a given album play in a random order after the first (manually selected) track. It says "Shuffle" at the top of the list, but that's not what I select, so what makes the nano play the remainder of the album tracks randomly? How do I switch Shuffle off in the album context?

When you click on an album, the first thing in the list of songs is the shuffle button. If you tap it, it will play the album in random order. That may be how you got there.

If you are playing and you see the first play window (the one with the play button between the previous-track and next-track buttons), swipe the screen to the left to see the window where the progress bar is at the bottom. Above that progress bar are three icons. The left-most is the repeat button. The middle is the Genius button. The right-most is the shuffle button. If the shuffle button is blue, tap it to turn it white. When it's white, it will play in list order.

This is all covered on page 21 of the manual, which you can download from this link.

So Apple decided that rather than have the button where you turn on shuffle, also turn it off, it would put a button to turn off shuffle in a random window. Pretty bad. Really bad. Terrible. Mindless.

And Apple has discontinued the only really small model with a touch screen that sold for about 125, and replaced it with a big one you can't wear. Another bone headed decision.

What I really like is when I have the control window open, it automatically replaces that useful window with one that doesn't do anything, and covers up information I need. Or it puts an album cover in the background so I can't see the controls clearly. I hope the guy who designed this interface left with Forstall.

This did solve my question but there is no button on this page to reward the guy who solved it.

Yes, it's unbelievable that the useless album-cover picture is displayed instead of the controls for the song you're playing. And it's even more unbelievable that there's no setting available that allows you to change this default. If you're playing your nano in the car, with the device simply connected to the radio's AUX socket, then it could be downright dangerous as you fiddle around trying to get back to the control screen before you can pause or switch to the next track. I wonder how many accidents have been caused by this and whether anyone has tried to sue Apple as a result?

Are you saying it skips to Next Song continuously? Depending on your iPod nano model, it can receive remote control signals from the headphones cord. It can receive false signals (in this case to skip to next song) from faulty headphones, even if the cord does not have buttons. As a test, try using different headphones, to see if the problem goes away. Also, make sure the plug is fully inserted (a slightly misaligned plug can also produce false control signals).
