Will a standars seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500gb SATA hard drive work in a xserve

Hi All

My xserve recently failed, "boot up disk died" and I imediately replaced it with a whole new system for the purposes of time. now I have some time on my hands I would like to get it back up and running as either a backup sytem or run it as a seperate server.

the specs for the machine are:

1x2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon; 2GB SDRAM; 2x500Gb SATA HDrives;SD; OSX Svr v.10.5

and i wonder if a standard off the shelf seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500gb SATA hard drive will work imediately without any need for firmware update?

Please find an image of the failed HD below.

First time on a forum so any advice will be much appreciated.

Yes it will. Simply screw the new SATA drive in to the Apple caddy, insert, format in Disk Utility and away you go.

One further question, if i was to buy 3x1tb drives and more memory would it be possible to set the xserve up in a RAID configuration?

To a point, yes. If you have a hardware RAID card installed you can do this properly. If not, you can still set up software RAID through Disk Utility using the install DVD.

I don't know what your server will end up doing, but I would recomend way more than 2GB RAM. Hope that helps.
