Attempt to burn failed - 4450 error

I see at least two other people have encountered this error. I put a new CD in and attempt to burn some purchased songs to it. The process starts, looks like it's working on the first song, and then I get a message that iTunes is cancelling the burn and the error:

"The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred. 4450."

When I check the CD, all the tracks are list as 1KB .cda files which is, of course, enough to make the CD useless.

I found a KB article at one point that suggested updating my CD drivers. I checked but there were no newer ones that what I have installed already. Has anyone solved this problem in any other way? My CD drive is listed as LG CD-RW 8080B when I look in device manager. I also just updated to the latest version of iTunes.

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.

I'm having exactly the same problem. Get the message after it burns the 1st song. I've run the latest Itunes updates, tried to reinstall it, same problem. Gone through 10 blanks now, very frustrated, never had the trouble before. I've tried Maxell & TDK discs. Moved burn speed way down, still no deal. No updates are available for my driver either. Here is my diagnostic. I keep seeing others with this problem, but no real solutions yet, argh.

Danfan,

Let's start with the support page for your computer. Go there and click the "show all" link.

Go there and download and install the drivers labeled "Intel 800 Series Integrated Chipset" and "NEC NR-7900A HH 24X CD-RW". It won't hurt to update your video driver as well, "ATI Rage 128 Ultra 16MB".

You've got a partial install of Roxio in your CD filters. So, if the new drivers don't work, come back and we'll clean up your lower filters.

This thread began with me posting the same question. Toonz, you asked if I would post the info from iTunes. I've got that posted for you as an earlier part of the thread. Any suggestions from looking at that?

Thanks for any assistance....

toonz, chesterbeej -
Thanks for your help. I updated my CD-RW drive, didn't know Dell had updates for their bundled stuff on their site. Itunes help sent me to NEC which had nothing. Tried to update my "Intel...chipset", but said it was already updated. Will do the video driver later.
After this, I got a clean burn. Thought I was golden, but problem continues to happen. I've burned 100's of discs and never had this problem before, just don't get why now?? Here's my latest diagnostic, I'm desparate.

Danfan,

You're running older version of the firmware on that NEC drive. If you go to the Dell site support for that drive. You will get to the page where it has the download file and the instructions and clearly says that it's a firmware update so that the drive will support Sony CDR media.

I'm guessing that you were able to burn 100s of discs and now it won't burn because you've switched media brands or you've got a stack of media that came from the end of the day or something. If you've switched spindles of blank discs, this could be the problem.

chesterbeej,

I did answer you,

Apologies, the message was not there when I checked. I did some poking around & found where to adjust the burning speed. Set it to 8x, same results. I have a Compaq Presario (clunker) 7200, but I'll have to check exactly which model when I get home tonite. I found the site to download drivers, etc. I'll try that & see if it makes any difference.

Sometime or another the $15 gift certificate for the iTunes songs I downloaded is just not going to be worth the number of CDs I've ruined trying to get this to work. Apple support is usually very good, but not in this case.

Mar 1, 2006 2:10 PM in response to chesterbeej

chesterbeej,

When you look at the download drivers page for your computer, the things I look for is (a) a new chipset driver, (b) new video driver particularly if you have an nVidia card, and (c) new firmware for the optical drive.

Come back if this doesn't fix your problem.

And the trick is to always test these burning problems with a CDRW disc that you can erase and reuse. They're a tiny bit more expensive, but you don't end up with a stack of coasters like you do with CDRs. And then when you finally have gotten the burn problems resolved, then go back to the CDRs. (Because CDRWs won't play in your car stereo.)

I am getting the same error, 4450 unable to burn. I had no problems until I installed a new DVD/CD burner. But I still think it is an itunes issue. I can burn single cd's or dvd's. I updated all my drivers, set my speed to 8 and updated my firmware as suggested. I burn audio books to CD and it takes multiples. This is very frustrating!
