Smart Mailboxes trouble

I just made the switch from Windows to Mac and couldn't be happier. Decided to forego Outlook as well and use Apple Mail, ditto. I was able to create 'folders' and rules and apply in a few seconds that would have taken 10x longer in Outlook. However. For some reason not all of the emails that matches the ruleset tht were in the inbox prior to the rule moved over. Only some did. I checked to make sure the from address which formed the rule was the same and it was, even tried Apply Rule on the errant emails to no avail. Am I missing something?

OK. You do understand that Smart Mailboxes do not move messages. They are just a search tool for to find messages to certain criteria. They still will remain in the original mailboxes.

So the part about applying rules does not work for smart mailboxes. And the part about messages moving over does not apply.

You can use Mail rules to move messages to a local mailbox.

So reading your question is confusing to me.

Smart Mailboxes are used as a search tool to find specific messages that apply to criteria you set for quick reference. The messages actually remain in the original Mailboxes.

Rules look for specific criteria you set. When they meet the criteria, the actions you set for that rule will be executed.

So, please explain exactly what you're trying to accomplish.

Hi I was just about to reply with the same conclusion, I 'figured' it out finally this am.

Mail isn't moved so it stays in inbox anyway, I was expecting 'Outlook' behavior and then realized it was simply a filter.

Sorry for the confusion it was based on my assumption.

Really fantastic tool I must say; pretty much a couple clicks I can turn a contact into a folder with a rule. Instead of worrying about setting a Custom Alert for each one, all I did was to now add a real rule; when emails come in from anyone in contact book bounce the tray and display alert. This process would have taken me hours in Outlook. SO glad to be done with that!

Thanks for being patient!
