How to I turn off the sound when a text message is received?
Go to Settings/Sounds and you can choose None for any alerts that you do not want to hear.

Found it! Actually, it is settings > general > sounds > text tone.
Actually, it is settings > general > sounds > text tone.
That location does not exist in iOS. The alerts are in Settings/Sounds as I stated, with this one being Settings/Sounds/Text Tone.
