My iPhone isn't connecting to a charger and the center button just stopped working. The phone won't charge, with the charger, plugging it into a USB port, or with the charging case I have. I've tried connecting the phone to iTunes in hopes of resetting it, but it isn't even recognizing anything's in the USB port.

One thing that is common to all those problems is the Flex Cable #4 Connector (the iPhone dock connector flex cable). Most likely this has come loose from the Logic Board. At my Apple Store the Genius will open the iPhone and simply press Connector #4 carefully back down to its connector on the Logic Board for free. Before opening and during all repairs of iPhone 3GS, make sure iPhone is OFF or you risk serious damage to the iPhone.
How long would this take? And is there a risk that this wouldn't fix the problem? Thanks so much for your help!
It would take Apple Genius 3 minutes to do this. There is no risk to iPhone as long as it is OFF, and person is experienced as an Apple Genius would be.
This would be first step in fixing this iPhone, with probability of this being the problem at greater than 90% chance.
