Q: Need help with emac restoration

I bought an eMac in a garage sale. It came with Tiger installed in it. I am completely new to Mac OS's. In the effort of trying to upgrade it to Leopard, I think I erased the hard disk(MacHD). After that it immediately restarted and got stuck on the apple logo screen with a spinning wheel below it. Now I didn't get a CD/DVD when I bought it. And with the help of my friend now I have a leopard image in a hard disk.( I have a 250gb hard drive, about 180 is partitioned with fat32 filesystem, and the other 60gb has the leopard image). I restored the leopard .dmg into the partition using the disk utility application with the help of his mac book. So can anyone help me on how I need to proceed.

Hello & a warm welcome to Macdom & the forums.

Big problem, if the 10.5 DMG is from a MacBook or any other IntelMac, it won't run on the eMac that has a Motorola PPC CPU.

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure if the leopard image is just for intelMac's or not. So, do you think that could be the reason why my Harddisk doesn't show up when I try to boot from it.

Yes, quite likely... on the IntelMac see if it's GUID Partition scheme, that won't work for an eMac.

    Hi,

I gave up on restoring the emac. Now i am very determined to get it back to normal.

So I have a emac with nothing on the hard drive( its all empty, I erased it)

I have a firewire cable to connect emac to macbook pro

I have a retail copy of tiger meant for emac in the form of .dmg

So can u help me restore?

You'd need to restore the DMG to a DVD/CDs, depending on size.

Put that Install DVD in the MBP, connect via Firewire, boot the MBP into Target mode...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661

Boot the eMac with the Option key held down, see if the Install Disc in the other Mac shows up as a boot choice.

So I connected MBP and emac using firewire

I turned on emac by pressing down 't' and it has a firewire symbol on its screen and the MBP after selecting TDM has both firewire and thunderbolt symbols

so what to do now, apart from the symbols nothing else is on the screen .. and I am unable to get past that screen in both the computers.

    edit:

I didn't understand what u meant first, so I restarted MBP(with install dvd) in TDM and emac with option key. So emac detected the dvd and ran it.

But the problem is I cannot select the destination volume to install mac osx. the error i get is "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume..." .. so what do i do now?

Nope, boot the MBP using he t key, boot the eMac holding Option or alt, this should make the

    OK, booted the last way,

    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.

highlight the eMac's Hard Drive in Disk Utility, click the blue Info icon, what Format is it?

    How to format your disks...

No, not getting tired of it, just that free Dial-up will soon be my connection, & a page here at Apple can take upto 15-20 minutes to load, whilst the x704 site loads in a second or four on most pages.

Oh I see. Free dialup will be a saving. You will be missed here and in the 10.5 forum, and possible others that I don't frequent. Take this topic for instance, I would not have thought the OP's dmg would ever work. Your patience wins the day.

I have an inkling the phrase, 'try x704.net/bbs/' might see a bit of use down the track.
