Times new roman has too large spacing in Pages

The font appears normal in other applications, such as text edit. What has gone wrong?

I've just looked on my system (Lion 10.7.3) which is a fairly clean install I just did recently:

There are two Times fonts in the system:

Times.dfont and Times New Roman.ttf

The first is by Apple and second is by Monotype.

You can open the Font panel in Pages and search the list of fonts by typing Times in the field at the bottom of the panel. Select some of the faulty times type and change it to other Times versions and see what happens and if it straightens out.

Manage Fonts in the little gear ayt the bottom of the Font palette will take you to Font Book where you can get info (command i) on the fonts.

If you hit a real problem I'll email you my copy.

Not specifically following the discussion regarding MS Sans Serif v. Microsoft Sans Serif (i.e. the old v. the new generation), I may say that there are at least 4 generations of Times New Roman, (hereafter TNR), even if preserving the same name over years:

- TNR distributed in old Windows 3.x.x, including its Central European, Cyrillic, turkish and Greek variants

- TNR distributed in Windows 95 and some time, until win 98 I guess, which included, I think, the localized variants.

- TNR distributed beginning with Win 2000 and which, for some time, was also available for free on MS site together with other MS basic font set (Arial, Tahoma, Verdana, Courier New—)

- TNR included in XP and later, with an update via Bulgarian and Romanian European Union Update, which inriched the font repertoire; with this update, I think it is the font included in Vista and later (am not sure); this update was released approx. when Vista was released too.

Apple also install a TNR version which, at least in the last two Mac OS builds, is a version with a rich font repertoire, presumably the same distributed in Vista and later.

There is another TNR version installed in Office 2008 and 2001 which strangely is older than the one installed by Apple, as it has a poorer repertoire. Choosing to install these version, leads to having two TNR generations installed, as revealed by Font Book. If installing TNR is chosen upon installin Offic 2008 and 2011, Font Book should be used, choose custom to type some Central European chars, and then see which is the newer version, i.e. with a richer repertoire.

Being a total mess here, I wonder which version or versions of TNR are there, I would bet there are at least two on the same mac, Font Book should show them up.
