    Use PICT format.

AppleWorks reduces the resolution of all other image files to 72dpi.

Use Preview to save the image as a PICT file before inserting it into AppleWorks.

There are two issues at work here. First, as Barry said, AppleWorks changes the resolution of any graphic format except PICT to 72 dpi. The best solution to this problem is to save the image as PICT before inserting into AppleWorks. My favorite for this is GraphicConverter, but you can use Preview or Photoshop Elements or any other application that can save as PICT.

For the second issue, this is a problem that became more noticeable with AppleWorks 6.2.9 & has something to do with postscript printing. Go to Preferences > General > Topic: Text & turn Fractional Character Widths on. I know it's a text setting, but it really does work to print graphics clearer.
