What is winmail.dat?

People send me attachments to my gmail account which I open through Apple Mail program. Everytime the attachment is shown as winmail.dat and I can't open it. The same message sent to my .mac account will open. How can I let these attachments come through to my mail account?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Also using MacBook Air with 10.6.8

Winmail.dat is usually attached to emails when someone uses Microsoft Outlook. Tell the sender to send emails in plain text format.

I usually ignore it, if the sender wants to send something important he will find a way.

If you really believe you need to decode the file, try this free tool: http://www.winmail-dat.com/online.php

Having problems with Winmail.dat attachments? This is really Windows problem but their hubris will not allow them to admit it.

Windows does have a global fix for this problem but it is not a general patch - in their KB there is a fix for Exchange servers which cause the winmail.dat problem but most users don't know about it or have it implemented.

Here is a solution that Apple users can get for $30. An Austrian program and APP called Letter Opener http://www.creativeinaustria.com/http:// is the solution to seamlessly opening Winmail.dat files.
