iPad icon repeatedly shows up in my iTunes menu.

When I open iTunes, the menu on my iMac indicates my iPad is connected even though it is not. I will eject and later in the day, it reappears (still not connected). The other day it began synching, even though it was not connected. Is there some setting I need to change or is it possible that it is doing this wirelessly (even when iPad is shut down)?

I sync my devices wirelessly over WiFi and I do not auto sync. I sync when I tell iTunes or the iPad/iPod to sync. My iPad constantly appears in iTunes if iTunes is running and my iPad is turned on. I have never had the device sync when it was turned off. My iPad is almost always powered up - but not my iPod.

Sometimes I will have my iPod Touch and my iPad both turned on and both will appear in iTunes. If I turn the iPod off - which I do because I don't use it all, that much - the iPod will still show in iTunes. However, if I try to initiate a sync with the powered off iPod, iTunes will look for it unsuccessfully and it will eject it on its own.
