Lost my iPhone password...trying to restore and getting message from iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode

iPhone 4S, Windows XP

Did you try to connect in recovery mode, as shown in this article? iOS: Unable to update or restore

and iOS: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
