Open a finder window to the startup drive. Most often it's called MacIntosh HD. Drag the applications folder to the right side of the dock.

Thanks. I had already found your reply to a similar problem and also a way to change the icon that appeared, which was of the first application in the folder. This was very helpful.

I accidentally dragged the second icon off the left side of my dock and lost it. I think it was labeled Apps, but I'm not sure. Clicking on it showed all my installed applications in a full-screen display with multiple windows.
I can create an Applications folder icon on the right side of the dock as explained here and elsewhere, and clicking it displays a window (not full-screen) containing icons for all my applications, similar to the lost app, but not the same. However, what I am looking for is instructions on how to recover the icon that was on the left side of my dock. If only apps are allowed on the left side of the dock, then it must have been an app, but where is it located? I can't find such an app in my Macintosh HD > Applications folder.
I'm running Mac OS X 10.7.4.
