MacBook Pro
the volume changes in what way?
When the headphones are not plugged in it's on full volume when they are pluggin in it's reduced it's lower but I haven't adjusted the volume in any way.
is the headphone jack pushed all the way into the connecting port (completly flush with the side of the mac) and have you tried more then one set of headphones?
If on Lion and the volume changes consistently between the earbuds and the internal speakers, it may just be a feature. The OS has always treated each as a different output device, as seen on the Sound control in System Preferences, maybe now it memorizes the last used setting for each. Will have to test that out...
I have Lion..not a feature.
It is pushed all the way. It only happens to this particular pair of apple headphones.

then I would think that it is a problem with the headphones, not the mac itself.
will it spoil my mac if i continue to use it?
if you continue to use the apple headphones you have? No, it won't spoil your mac, the sound won't just be as good if you use the other ones that work correctly.
Do your earphones have a volume control in the line? If so, check the setting.
Ciao.
