I can't get past the white boot up screen

Recently I installed the latest software update, left it to do its job, and the next day when I came to turn it on it kept getting to a white screen covered in black writing, asking me to restart. After shutting down a few times it has stopped asking me to restart, but is now not getting any further than the white boot up screen.

I have tried reinstalling the OS disc, but after getting to about a minute of finishing, the timer decides to go up, and did get up to -24 hours and -4 minutes. This is when I decided to turn the whole thing off and see if anyone had any suggestions.

Would appreciate any ideas!
