"Apple ID only valid for U.S. Store", but I have it set to U.S. store?

I just upgraded to ios 5. My app store and itunes store somehow reverted back to an old apple id I had used a few years ago when I lived in Switzerland. Therefore (on my iphone) I signed out and signed in with my U.S. apple id that I use successfully on my iMac and Apple TV and had used successfully on my iPhone before I upgraded to ios5. The app store (on my iPhone) now indicates that I am in the U.S. store. However when I try to update an app, I get an error message that says "This Apple ID can only be used in the U.S. app store."

I am totally confused. Any suggestions?

The issue is that your credit or debit card credentials linked to your Apple ID must be associated with the same country where you reside.

"Although you can browse the iTunes Store in any country without being signed in, you can only purchase content from the iTunes Store for your own country. This is enforced via the billing address associated with your credit card or other payment method that you use with the iTunes Store, rather than your actual geographic location."
