it's command+shift+3, NOT shift+command+3.

If the keyboard shortcut isn't working for you, launch the "Grab" utility from the Utilities folder. The easiest way is to just do a Spotlight search for Grab.
Select the Capture menu, then select the kind of shot you want.
command + shift+ 3 doesn't work for me either. Can't figure this out!
Check to see if the cmd+shft+3 is enabled.
Open Keyboard system preferences, Keyboard Shortcuts. Select Screen Shots in the left panel and make sure the appropriate checkboxes are checked in ther right panel.
I they already were checked, just try logging out and logging back in.
Are you certain it isn't working? There isn't any feedback with shift-cmd-3. The image file will be written to your Desktop as Screen Shot date at time.png
Shift-cmd-4 will turn yur cursor into a crosshair. See if that happens.
Be sure you are not accidentally adding Control to the command key group. If you do, the screenshot will be placed on the Clipboard instead of creating a new image file on the Desktop.
You guys are the greatest, all is fixed!!! I did the Shift-CMD-4 used the crosshair once and then used Shift-CMD-3 again and it started working again. PERFECT! Love this community you all are a big help.
I checked that and all was checked, it was weird... but i tried Frank's way and then all worked again! Thanks!
Been annoyed with this for a long time and just checking the key commands worked! Thanks to X423424X above!
