I cannot find AirPlay on my iPad2 - the icon is missing. I've looked at the left side of the multi-task bar and there is no AirPlay icon. So I started playing a music track thinking that it becomes an option only when there is some media to stream - no change.
Is your iPad using IOS5?
I have had that happen to me as well from time to time... i just end up restarting the iPad and that usually corrects it.
To fix this permanently:
go to your apple TV network settings and write down your apple TV IP address.
log in to your router settings (usually 192.168.1.1), and go to the option for port forwarding.
On a linksys router for example, you'll select 'port range forwarding'.
Open the following ports and assign them all to forward to the IP address on your Apple TV

save the settings, reboot your router, then turn wi-fi off, then back on for each device you want to work with airplay.

I am going to try that tonight, hope it works. I have an iphone 4S and ATV2. I am not seeing any airplay icons on my iphone at all.
nice - it took me forever to figure this out. this should do the trick for you as well. please post the results! very common issue and it'd be nice for others to see that it works.

I was going to try your fix, but I figured I would upgrade my router's firmware first and see if that would be enough.
After the upgrade I can now see the airplay icon. Now the test is to see how long it stays. If it disappears again, I will try your fix next. Thanks!!!!!!
